First smoke-free apartment building in New York

The definition of "luxury living" may depend on the city where one is located. And in New York city, the definition differs even more greatly. To some, luxury living may mean a classic six on the Upper East Side. To others, it may mean having a kitchen big enough to hold a table. And residents of New York can rest assured that whatever luxuries they seek, they will pay for them. In the dog-eat-dog world of New York real estate, things that may be considered necessities to some are luxuries to others.

1510 Lexington Avenue has taken luxury to a new level. Its LEED Certification is currently pending, and it is also the first smoke-free apartment building in New York. And did I mention that it's absolutely gorgeous?

Located on the Upper East Side, three blocks away from Central Park, the building offers luxury living at its eco-friendly finest. The large, spacious lobby, finished in natural stone and architectural woodwork, extends into a cafe and lounge with a fireplace, and around the corner from that is the residence's gym, which stays open later than usual to ensure the residents are able to exercise, regardless of their busy work schedules.

The apartment units, which range from studios to three bedrooms, all feature another luxury rarely found in New York: large windows. Some units even have floor-to-ceiling windows. Not only do the windows help decrease electric use and cost by offering natural light and warmth, they also provide stunning views of the city (and some much-needed Vitamin D). Each apartment unit is thermally-insulated to ensure heat is not wasted. Each apartment is equipped with an Energy Star washer and dryer and low-flow plumbing equipment. The kitchen counters are made of granite, which is more durable than other materials. Even the hallways are eco-friendly, utilizing motion-activated low-VOC lights to decrease wasted electricity. 1510 Lexington Avenue also features recycling bins for clothing and batteries as well as paper and building-wide water filtration.

Another longed-for luxury of city life is the roof deck. Well, 1510 Lexington Avenue has just that. The building boasts a green roof park with three exposures and seating areas, landscaped professionally. Additional amenities include a bicycle storage room, so residents don't have to utilize taxis or the subway system.

An eco-friendly lifestyle, supported by a luxury building? To a greeniac living in Manhattan, it doesn't get much better than this.

We have thousands of smoke free buildings in Canada and have had for many years . I think it's typical of the US to be behind the times when it comes to public safety and health. But I'm sure they will take credit for being the first !
